THE VW ID BEETLE ELECTRIC CAR IN THE NEWS
Week 27 2018 - VW Beetle could return as an EV
One of my most memorable experiences with an electric car was with a converted electric VW Beetle in 2015. I was fortunate to be a Top 10 finalist in the local leg of the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme where one of my co-finalist was a woman, Santa Scheepers of ZingCo with her ZingBug, an electric converted classic VW Beetle. Now that the latest generation VW Beetle model is reaching the end of its run it is rumored that VW executives are considering bringing it back in a couple of years as an EV through its I.D. unit. The proposed VW ID Beetle can easily fit on the MEB platform used for the VW I.D. Neo hatch and will allow for the classic car to again be driven by a rear wheel drive system. Should the Beetle be reborn as an electric car, it will only be for the 2021 model year or later. The picture used on the post cover is a rendering by Brazilian artists Kleber Silva.
