Testing of the Smart ForTwo ED started as early as 2007 with 100 vehicles, followed by the second generation in 2009 comprising of 2,300 units introduced through the Car2Go carsharing scheme in 18 markets. Daimler introduced the production version in 2013 and made the Smart ED available in 30 markets.
