SUZUKI ELECTRIC VEHICLES
The Suzuki electric vehicles strategy has been limited at best and hampered by its alliances with VW and own capital. Suzuki ended its capital alliance with VW in September 2015. In February 2016 Suzuki entered into a technology partnership with Toyota which in October 2016 changed to a full-fledged partnership. Suzuki experimented with various electric vehicles, such as the Suzuki Every Van and the Swift Plug-in Hybrid. The Suzuki Ciaz is currently the company’s only hybrid energy production vehicle but since its only a hybrid and not a plug-in vehicle we will not explore it further here. At the Geneva Suzuki, Tata, and Mahindra announced in early 2016 that it will form an alliance in India to develop the Electric Vehicle sector with the support of the Government FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) program there. In the first half of 2017 both Suzuki’s rivals, Tata and Mahindra made announcements of their electrification programs but as at June 2017, Suzuki has yet to make an announcement.
Suzuki’s subsidiary Maruti Suzuki, previously known as Murati Udyog Limited announced in 2016 that it would bring the Suzuki Swift PHEV to production in 2017. The 2017 Swift was launched during the Geneva Auto Show in March 2017 but only included a Hybrid model.
Being part of the Toyota family aligns the Suzuki electric car strategy to that of Toyota’s which lags the rest of the market due to its pursuit of Fuel Cell vehicles. In 2016 Toyota created a new electric division to try and catch up to the market.
