Cadillac is GM’s luxury brand and aims to
produce a plug-in hybrid for almost all its models. The Cadillac
electric car strategy is set by its parent, GM. GM is placing a huge focus on mobility by
executing a plan to capitalize on the future of personal mobility using
tools such as connectivity, ridesharing, car sharing, and autonomous
driving. In January 2016,
GM started its personal mobility brand called Maven, which combines and
expands the company’s multiple car-sharing programs, including the EN-V
2.0 pilot program with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. GM recently
announced a long-term strategic alliance with Lyft to create an
integrated network of on-demand autonomous vehicles in the United
States. GM will invest $500 million to help the company continue the
rapid growth of its successful ridesharing service. GM acquired Cruise Automation in early 2016 to further accelerate GM’s development of autonomous vehicle technology.
GM’s luxury car brand, Cadillac unveiled its first EV on Friday (Cover Image). I will try not to be critical, but the Lyriq is yet another example way Tesla is valued at what it is currently. Legacy automakers, such as Cadillac, are putting forward cars that will be launched in three years’ time but with EV technology that competes with Tesla models of three years ago. Not a lot of data was made available of the Lyriq Crossover EV since it is unveiled as a show car, which is 85% of what the final model will be. Cadillac announced that the Lyriq would go into production by the end of 2022 and available early 2023. The Lyriq is aiming for a range of 300miles (480km) with a 100kWh battery pack. The Tesla Model X currently achieves 325 miles (520km).
The president of GM’s Cadillac
unit told Automotive News that the company decided on electrification
as it re-evaluates its diesel program. To date, Cadillac has only
produced the discontinued ELR plug-in hybrid vehicle and the CT6 PHEV
currently in circulation. The decision by Cadillac will snowball the
demise of the diesel engine as it joins other automakers such as Volvo,
BMW, VW and Mercedes who all announced the end of their diesel programs.
Porsche also announced this week that it will drop diesel propelled vehicles.
