Bollinger B1 SUT electric pickup

The unique feature of the Bollinger B1 SUT EV is the pass through door, utilizing the space left by the exclusion of a combustion engine. Bollinger set and met an aggressive timeline launching the Bollinger SUT in July 2017. Robert Bollinger, the company’s founder, and CEO was quoted as follows on his vision for the electric Sports Utility Vehicle:

“When I designed this truck, I wanted it to have rugged good looks with a very bold presence, I envisioned the vehicle as the ultimate truck for work and play which would be the perfect truck for ranchers, builders, DIYers and off-roaders but without the environmental effects and carbon footprint of a traditional gas-powered SUV.”

In April 2017 the company revealed the following details of the truck:

The all-aluminum chassis with a high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steel rollover structure is designed for optimal off road vehicle proportions. It sports a wheelbase of 105 inches, front and rear track of 68 inches, an approach angle of 56 degrees, departure angle of 53 degrees, and break over angle of 33 degrees. The chassis by itself weighs just 295 pounds while not sacrificing structural or torsional rigidity. The base ride height provides for 15.5 inches of ground clearance but will be adjustable using a self-leveling, 4-wheel independent, hydro-pneumatic suspension within the 10 inches of wheel travel. The A-arms are made of high strength steel and attach to the frame via durable polyurethane bushings, while disconnectable anti-roll bars allow traction enhancing, full suspension articulation during off-road maneuvers.

“We utilized the area between the chassis rails, below the driver and passenger, to house our battery storage system and located the high voltage electronics in the center of the chassis below the floor level. This gives the vehicle a very low center of gravity which makes for unmatched on and off-road stability,” said Karl Hacken, Bollinger Motors’ Chief Engineer. “ We also designed the hydraulically-assisted steering rack in-house to allow us to fine tune the driving dynamics to our exact specifications.”

The chassis rides on Mud Terrain LT285/70/R17 tires with high offset aluminum wheels for go anywhere traction and performance. The wheels are attached with eight lugs to knuckle housed, geared axle hubs, which allow the entire suspension system to be raised on the chassis giving it the ability to clear a multitude of off-road obstructions. The regenerative braking system consists of 11.75 inch vented inboard discs and four-piston calipers.

2017 Week 19 - Bollinger SUT electric pickup teaser revealed

While most auto companies are trying to play catch up with Tesla, pinning their hopes on producing a luxury electric SUV. While the auto companies race to capitalize on the popular vehicle class to carve out a lead in the sector, a huge gap is open in the form of electric SUTs (Sports Utility Trucks). Now history is repeating itself with start-ups rushing to fill the gap. This week Bollinger Motors, started in 2015 in Hobart NY State USA teased the Bollinger SUT. The tease in the form of a picture of the interior cabin follows on a rendering earlier this year of the outside reflection of the pickup. The company is taking $1,000 refundable deposits to secure a SUT that could be configured to your use requirements. Bollinger plans to unveil the vehicle by July 2017. The powertrain is said to be revolutionary. Last week Workhorse unveiled its W15 concept range extended electric pickup truck. The Workhorse W-15, by the Ohio-based company with the same name, is set to sell for $52,000 and have a 60kWh (40kWh nominal rated) battery pack, promising a range of 320 miles.
